Horse Care Series

This six part series is dedicated to people, 7 years and up, who want to increase their knowledge of horses and their care. This interesting series will teach the correct language for describing horses and the equipment used daily. It will also serve to increase understanding of basic health and care of a horse or pony.

This is a hands-on course with live horses in the stable, but no previous horse experience is necessary.

TACK

In this class you will learn to recognize and identify English tack. This includes assembling a snaffle bridle, basic fitting to the horse and proper cleaning of leather.

HORSE HEALTH

During this class you will learn the signs of good health, including taking a horse’s pulse, respiration and temperature. Learn when to call the vet as well as common ailments and their treatment.

HORSE KEEPING

This class will include basic feeding practices, including popular feeds, schedules and watering. We will also discuss the safety and basic needs of shelters, fencing and paddocks.

GROOMING

This class will include basic horse handling techniques, identifying the use and reason for grooming tools, safety around the stable, behavior, blanketing and practicing the quick release knot.

HORSE IDENTIFICATION

Recognize and identify the popular breeds, colors, markings and parts of the horse. In this class you will learn about types, ages, how to measure a horse, and the correct method of describing a horse or pony.

FOOT AND SHOEING

In this class you will learn the basic anatomy of the hoof, as well as information about basic hoof care, trimming and shoeing.
